The Plumbing Installer Survey 2008

What do Australia’s plumbers think?

  • Market Trends
  • Attitudes to environmental issues and sustainable living.
  • Education and training, association membership, accreditation and information sources
    •  Choice of products and suppliers, and attitudes towards them.
    •  Labour issues, skills shortages, workforce and apprentices.
    •  Attitudes to licensing, insurance and statutory regulations.

A New Market Survey Who are the plumbers and what are their specialist areas? What are they thinking and doing?

  • What are their motivations?
  • How is the profession evolving?

The Plumbing Installer Report is the first ever in-depth survey of Australian plumbers. It will investigate areas such as: drainage, gas fitting, mechanical services plumbing, roof plumbing, sanitary plumbing, water plumbing and in particular environmental plumbing issues.

With the release of our most recent survey—The Sustainable Home in 2007—Connection Research gained many valuable insights into what Australian consumers think of environmental issues, their attitudes to choosing a plumber, the motivations behind their choice, and the suppliers of sustainable plumbing products.

In The Plumbing Installer Report we will take this research an important step further, evaluating plumbers’ attitudes to a range of plumbing issues, including the motivations and decision making process for a large range of plumbing products and the companies that supply them.

What do plumbers look for in a supplier?

How and why (and what) do they buy? Sanitaryware (baths, basins, showers, toilets), Tapware and fittings, Hot Water Systems, Piping Systems (metal/plastic/concrete & fittings), Valves / Pumps, Recycling / filter / sewer systems, HVAC, and environmental solutions. The survey will also examine their attitudes to education and training, information sources, associations and regulation.

Methodology and Scope The Plumbing Installer Report is based on a detailed survey of Australian plumbing installers. The survey conducted by mail, using a compiled list of plumbing contractors across Australia. We identified some 30,000 plumbers in Australia for this research project.

In particular, The Plumbing Installer Report includes topics that are deemed valuable but not currently researched in Australia.

The questionnaire covers such areas as:

  • Size of your company (number of employees)
  • Location and scope of operations.
  • How old are you?
  • How long have you been involved in the Plumbing Industry?
  • Main job function.
  • Percentage of business from residential and commercial.
  • Industry Associations and professional accreditations.
  • Hours per month and sources of professional development.
  • Gaps in available training.
  • Availability of skilled people in the industry, in various skills areas.
  • Importance of market factors (economic, technological, fashion, skills, user demand, etc.)
  • Major challenges (to your business and to the industry as a whole)
  • Current and preferred method(s) of contact with suppliers.
  • Importance of attributes in a supplier, and how well current suppliers deliver:
    • Quality of products
    •  Value for money
    •  Quality of support staff
    •  Quality of sales staff
    •  Technical support
    •  Product training.
